Sarah Beeny enjoys judging Affordable Home Ownership Awards, makes housing confession
Some people ignore her advice on TV but Channel 4 property presenter Sarah Beeny is determined to speak her mind about the Affordable Home Ownership Awards 2009.
“There’s something fantastic about encouraging people to do something that’s a good thing - and affordable housing is a good thing,” Beeny said during a break from judging the awards, which are supported by the National Housing Federation, the Homes and Communities Agency, Communities and Local Government (CLG) and the Royal Society of Architects in Wales (RSAW).
“When we have the awards ceremony (3 September), that’s celebrating good practice,” Beeny said. “I’m not saying the stick should not exist but the carrot is a better way to encourage people to be excellent and what these awards are doing is encouraging people to be outstandingly good.”
Beeny is in no doubt as to why housing associations should enter the awards, sponsored by Savills.
“If you win an award, you’re recognised by your industry and recognised by the press, then it was probably worth making a bit more extra effort,” she said. “It encourages other people to think, ‘Maybe I’ll make a bit more effort and hopefully I might win an award next year.’”
Beeny could talk about housing forever. “I’ve always liked housing. If you’re fortunate enough to do something for a living that you happen to find interesting, then you kind of like talking about it,” Beeny said. “I like talking about other things as well! I have a dating website.”
Beeny is expecting her fourth child in October but her oldest – a five-year-old son - has yet to pick up the housing bug. “No, he isn’t in his own house yet,” she jokes. “I’m thinking about him moving out.”
She might be fearless on the telly but had Beeny enjoyed her first time as a judge? “It’s been really interesting, very exciting. I have looked at them (the awards) before and it’s one of those things where you think, ‘I must get more involved in that.’”
Looking relaxed during the interview, Beeny dispenses blunt one-line prescriptions:
- “Buildings need people to live in them, to look after them.”
- “Housing is in pretty good shape compared to the rest of the economy (where) we are in serious pooh”
- “I don’t think there will be a generation of people who never own their own homes - some people won’t, some people will.”
Beeny welcomed more realistic house prices while recognising the human toll of the past year. And there was a last-minute confession from the housing superstar.
“I can’t really incentivise myself to finish our house rather than have a glass of wine and sit in the garden,” Beeny admitted. “I hate moving home.”
